New Zealand Saint Clair Family Estate wine dinner at E&O Hotel Penang

It was a delightful evening at the New Zealand Wine Dinner, featuring a selection of vintages from the renowned Saint Clair Family Estate. The event took place at Java Tree within the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in Penang, where we indulged in a sumptuous five-course meal artfully paired with wines from Saint Clair Family Estate, widely acclaimed as one of the world’s premier producers of Sauvignon Blanc hailing from the Marlborough wine region.

The menu encompassed aperitifs, appetizers, entrees, main courses, and sweet desserts, each thoughtfully matched with a variety of red and white wines courtesy of The Wine Shop.

 Our tasting journey included three white wines and two reds, all sealed with convenient screw caps:

  • Saint Clair Marlborough Origin Sauvignon Blanc 2022
  • Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2021
  • Saint Clair Pioneer Block 5 Pinot Gris 2022
  • Saint Clair Pioneer Block 14 Pinot Noir 2021
  • Saint Clair Omaka Reserve Pinot Noir 2021

The evening began with a captivating introduction to the wines by Kyle Thompson, Senior Winemaker for Saint Clair Family Estate. Kyle’s background in food science and microbiology, combined with his passion for winemaking, started his journey in England. He has since acquired international experience in wine regions like Bordeaux, France, and his education led him back to New Zealand to blend old-world traditions with New World innovation. Kyle’s expertise has resulted in numerous awards, with Saint Clair’s winemaking team earning over 300 trophies and 700 gold medals under his guidance. His dedication to winemaking allows him to work with exceptional grapes, fusing traditional methods with cutting-edge New Zealand winemaking techniques.

The aperitif featured the New Zealand Saint Clair Marlborough Origin Sauvignon Blanc 2022, a white wine with tropical aromas of passionfruit, guava, blackcurrant, and subtle mineral notes.

 Green-Lipped Mussel Gratin

The evening’s starter, Green-Lipped Mussel Gratin, was wonderfully complemented by the Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2021, which boasts intense fragrances of white fruits and herbs.

Crayfish Salad on Crispy Kumara

The appetizer, Crayfish Salad on Crispy Kumara, found its perfect wine pairing in the Saint Clair Pioneer Block 5 Pinot Gris 2022.

Braised Ostrich Fillet

The entree, a Braised Ostrich Fillet served with mousseline garbanzo bean, pomegranate, cilantro, and crispy paraoa rewena, was a standout, especially when paired with the Saint Clair Pioneer Block 14 Pinot Noir 2021. This red wine offered fresh berry notes, complex spicy aromas, and a velvety finish.

Herbs Crusted Rack of Spring Lamb

The main course featured a Herbs Crusted Rack of Spring Lamb, served with creamy polenta, green peas, and mint oil, creating a symphony of flavors that harmonized beautifully with the Saint Clair Omaka Reserve Pinot Noir 2021, a red wine that garnered two awards – Gold Medal, 5 Star Rating, Bob Campbell: The Real Review, 2023 and Gold Medal – New Zealand International Wine Show, 2023

Pavlova

The evening concluded with a delightful dessert, Pavlova, accompanied by sweet strawberries, and the choice of coffee or tea for each guest.
